Let’s face it – you’re only here because you can’t get fibre where you are or you’re considering getting Three 4G broadband because it’s cheap?

Well, you’re s*it out of luck with Three. Let me tell you a story…

For context, we opted for the fastest 4G router Three offers and the 24 month contract which also offered performance benefits – ?19pm.

We were like you once. Hopeful. Trusting. Ignorant. Sadly, upon unboxing the behemoth router (which, by the way, felt like it was made out of recycled straws) we were presented with the grand total of…. 2mbps. Yes, that’s right – 2. I’m willing to bet that Strangeways inmates get better 4G than that on the tiny phones that get smuggled in via some poor sod’s rectum. Needless to say, I had my doubts that it would be able to sustain all the working from home and blue movie streaming.

But, I thought, why not give it a go. So I did. Guess what? 2mbps is not enough to do anything. I watched an episode of Stranger Things on Netflix the potato quality meant that I had to rewatch that same episode once I had the internet sorted (more on that later.)

So I called Three. I was told, “Put it near a window.” It was near a window. I was then asked, “Could any family and friends use it and takeover the contract?” Absolutely absurd. ?19pm for a paper weight that’s not particularly weighty for my family and/or friends who are able to access fibre broadband – what a joke. I declined and cancelled in my cooling off period. If you’ve got this far and are not put off by now, I suggest you also ensure the cooling off period is fully utilised. If you fall outside of it because of the age old “I’ll cancel it tomorrow” you’ll be stuck in a contract for months.

What did I do then? Well, my 4G through Plusnet/EE on my phone happens to be quite good – 40mbps ish. I then figured, why don’t I try EEs 4G Broadband. So I did. Guess what? I got 40mbps via the 4G Hub which happens to look and feel more premium than the Three one and offers more WiFi frequency options. What’s the catch then? Well, for unlimited usage it costs ?50pm vs Three’s ?19pm. That being said, it’s broadband we’re comparing and EEs is LITERALLY 20x faster. By that measure, ?50 is reasonable in my opinion and it should be in yours too.

How does that old saying go? Cheaper is better? Nope, that’s not it is it. Oh yeah – you get what you pay for…
